The feeling starts somewhere between my odometer reading 10km to go and the sign signifying our destination is close by, and the feeling intensifies the closer I get to camp. It’s difficult to explain exactly how I feel. It’s more of a sense of relief than excitement that I experience. I feel an overwhelming sense of accomplishment, particularly during the most challenging days. Physiologically, my body changes at this time. I experience a rush of adrenalin, the ache in my lower body decreases significantly, and my mind refocuses. Conversations within the group also pick up after long periods of quiet reflection. I start to think about food and wonder what facilities the campsite might offer. A site which offers hot showers scores high on the list of desirable amenities after a long days ride. Depending on time of day and weather conditions, shaded sites also rank high. The feeling I enjoy most, when arriving at camp, is the moment I finally get off my bike, knowing I won’t see the saddle again until the next morning.
